SCANZ Conference 2026

We’re excited to host Aotearoa New Zealand’s only dedicated conference for science communications professionals, students, researchers, journalists, creatives and anyone passionate about connecting communities with science.

The next SCANZ conference will be held on Wednesday 25 - Friday 26 June in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The conference will be held at Haere-roa at the University of Canterbury, with 24 June dedicated to pre-conference activity and welcome event, followed by two full conference days on 25-26 June.

Online Webinar: AI tools for Science Communicators

AI is rapidly changing the digital landscape, and while there are arguably some scary things out there, AI technology is also providing tools that can be helpful in managing day to day tasks. Join digital consultant and AI specialist Claire Byrne for a conversation about AI tools that can support science communicators. Claire will demonstrate key tools she uses in her day-to-day and then open up for questions.

Claire Byrne is a product management consultant who specialises in making AI tools accessible and practical for everyday use. With experience leading product development teams in Australia and New Zealand, she's passionate about helping people discover how AI can genuinely support their work without becoming overwhelmed. Claire works with clients across various industries - including scientific organisations - to implement straightforward AI solutions that make communication and research tasks more efficient. 

This workshop is being offered free for SCANZ members.

A film about the toxic mix of big agriculture, politics and water security rights.

In 2014, the citizens of Toledo, Ohio had to go without running water for three days when a bloom of highly toxic algae entered the drinking water plant from Lake Erie. This should have been a wake up call for politicians, big agriculture, and citizens everywhere that freshwater resources are at risk of becoming toxic.

The Erie Situation explores the confluence of science, public sentiment, politics, and the powerful farming lobby as Ohio wrestles with how to confront the drivers of toxic algae in one of the Great Lakes.
